Connecticut Slot Machines Hit Jackpot in May

18 June 2001

CONNECTICUT –- June 17, 2001 –- As reported by the (Connecticut) Day: "Foxwoods Resort and Mohegan Sun won more than $116 million on their slot machines last month, after both casinos boosted the number of machines in play in April.

"At Mohegan Sun, which opened a new smoke-free slot casino with 637 additional machines, the win in May was $49.5 million, up 9.3 percent from May 2000. Foxwoods, which renovated its smoke-free Slots Down Under venue in April, had 192 additional machines on line in May and pocketed $66.5 million for the month.

"…The combined handle at the two casinos — the total amount of money fed into the slot machines in May — was $1,414,361,863. At Foxwoods, the handle was $804 million, up 1.6 percent from the same month the year before. The handle at Mohegan Sun was up 9 percent, to $610 million.

With more machines in play, the casinos are taking in more money overall, but less on each machine. Still, the average daily wins at Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods are well above those in Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

"…The average daily win at Foxwoods in May was $356, a dollar more per machine than in May 2000.

"…Both casinos are ramping up to the busy summer season, when they do their best business…"
