Connecticut Lawmakers Support Charity Gaming12 March 2003HARTFORD, Connecticut – As reported by the Connecticut: "In its rush to repeal the state's Las Vegas night law, the General Assembly inadvertently took away the right of schools and charitable organizations to operate carnival-type games. "Several lawmakers testified at a legislative hearing Tuesday in favor of a bill that would restore that right. "House Majority Leader Jim Amann, D-Milford, said that school officials had approached him in his city, concerned that they couldn't operate the games as part of the annual alcohol-free graduation party. "…The games in question include coin tosses, rubber duck races and fishing. The winners typically receive a prize. "State Rep. Annette Carter, D-Hartford, said, however, that she believes the games are a form of gambling that should be banned. "…In January, the legislature repealed the state's Las Vegas night law, which allowed charities and church groups to run casino games to raise cash. The repeal is part of a drive to block another Indian casino in the state…" |
