Connecticut Couple Charged With Stealing Lottery Tickets

6 May 2001

MIDDLETOWN, Connecticut – May 6, 2001 –As reported by the New Britain Herald: "Lori Light, 28, was arrested on a warrant April 7 by State Police and charged with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny. Matthew Light, 26, was also arrested on a warrant April 7 and charged with first-degree larceny and conspiracy to commit larceny. Each was released on $500 bail.

"On Jan. 25, a State Police trooper began investigating a larceny complaint at Little Rooster Liquors Package Store, 363 Main St., Durham. The owner believed two employees -- the Lights -- had been taking lottery tickets from the business without paying for them, according to court documents. The owner reviewed surveillance tapes and noticed the employees taking lottery tickets over five months with a reported loss of $23,547.15, the arrest warrant affidavit stated.

"…It wasn't until January when [the store owner] saw a discrepancy between the number of tickets sold and the proceeds. It appeared the business was doing well because the instant scratch-off books from Lottery Headquarters were practically empty, but the commission on sales was `considerably low,' court documents said.

"The owner reviewed six tapes, between Dec. 18, 2000 and Jan. 8, 2001, and saw Lori and Matthew Light taking tickets without paying for them, the arrest warrant affidavit said. He confronted both employees, and at first Lori Light denied taking the tickets, but later admitted it, according to court documents.

"…After the owner confronted the Lights, there were no further losses, according to court documents. Lori Light left her position, but Matthew Light continued to work at the business, the court documents said…"
