Connecticut Communities to Vote on Casino Expansion

5 November 2002

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: "Timothy R. Love, a Penobscot Indian from Maine who championed the Mashantucket Pequots as they developed a gambling empire in the woods of southeastern Connecticut, is hoping that casino riches can bring independence to his tribe, too.

Love is a Ledyard resident who tried to help repair the strained relationship between the Mashantuckets and surrounding communities after Foxwoods Resort Casino opened in 1992. Now he's involved in a proposal to build a casino in Maine, where the Penobscots and another tribe, the Passamaquoddy, are looking for a town that would welcome them.

"To make this work, people have to feel like we are not going to unilaterally make decisions that are going to have a negative impact on them," Love said.

The Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe hope to build a $650 million casino in York County in southern Maine.
