Connecticut Casinos Report Record Slot Wins17 June 2003CONNETICUT – As reported by the Connecticut Day: “Gamblers poured record amounts of money into slot machines at Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun during the rainy month of May. “Foxwoods had the second best month in its 11-year history and the best May ever, according to William J. Sherlock, president and chief executive officer. The casino won $74.6 million from its patrons, a 7.5 percent increase over the previous May. “…Memorial Day weekend was one of the busiest weekends ever at Mohegan Sun, according to William J. Velardo, president, chief executive officer and general manager. Slot machine win grew 12.3 percent, year-over-year, to $70.1 million. “…The Connecticut market, comprised of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, grew 10 percent over the previous May, an indication that the economy is getting stronger, said Velardo. “…The Mashantucket Pequots' casino out-earned Mohegan Sun by $4.5 million in win, meaning it kept that much more of the money played into its slot machines. The handle, or total amount played in its 6,582 machines, was $910.8 million, which was $47 million more than the $863.1 million in coin and cash played in and paid out at Mohegan Sun. “…Foxwoods' monthly contribution to the state was $18.6 million and Mohegan Sun's was $17.5 million…” |
