Connecticut Casino Workers' Safety Probed

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Norwich Bulletin: "The Public Safety Commission discussed safety measures Monday that may have prevented the death of a Mohegan Sun employee on Route 32 earlier this month.

"Since an accident claimed the life of 32-year-old Juan Chang of Montville on Oct. 4, the commission has scrutinized the safety of the busy Route 32-New London Turnpike intersection.

"Chang was walking along the road one night after work when a Jeep struck her.

"The accident has raised questions about the safety of casino employees who walk through the intersection daily to get to and from work.

"…`Clearly a shuttle needs to be put in place for pedestrian commuters who only have to travel across the busy intersection in order to get to work,' [Commission Chairman Tony] Pescatello said.

"…Town Council liaison Ellen Hillman said the casino already has made an initial effort to secure the public safety of its employees. Hillman said the casino provides bright orange reflective vests to pedestrian employees who want them. However, Hillman said some employees refuse to wear them.

"…Commission member Joe Kennedy said the intersection will be even more dangerous during the winter unless the casino does more to protect its pedestrian commuters…"
