Concerns Over Pokies18 August 2003NEW ZEALAND -- As reported by New Zealand City: ``Councils are concerned they are not going to be given enough power to limit the numbers of pokies in their area. ``Local Government New Zealand says the Responsible Gambling Bill moving through Parliament won't let them influence the activities of a venue established before October 2001, when the bill had its first reading. ``Spokeswoman Sue Piper describes that limitation as a 'Clayton's provision.' ``She says many people have come to accept pokies, but they want more controls. ``...She says the Government promised to give communities the power to control pokies, but is not giving them the tools to do that..." |
