Communities Line Up To Back Lafayette County Casino5 August 2000DARLINGTON, WISCONSIN—Aug. 5, 2000 – As reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: "Communities throughout Lafayette County have started lining up to support a proposed casino in southwestern Wisconsin - and some are hoping to play host to the gaming facility. "The communities of Darlington, Shullsburg, Benton and Belmont have all passed resolutions supporting the Lafayette County Board in its efforts to land a casino complex proposed by the Lac du Flambeau Chippewa. The board hopes to sign a 20-year deal with the tribe that could be worth at least $80 million to the county. "The casino complex would include a hotel, convention center, restaurants and possibly an 18-hole golf course. County officials say the casino would bring 1,000 jobs to the region. "…The Darlington and Shullsburg common councils last week unanimously approved resolutions in support of the casino. The Benton Village Board voted 5-1 to support it, and Belmont village officials have agreed in principle to back the casino. "Darlington, Shullsburg and Benton also have agreed to locate the casino in their communities, if a satisfactory deal can be reached between the tribe and the County Board. "…Tribe officials are expected to conduct a feasibility study in Lafayette County; however, it also is in negotiation with at least four other Wisconsin communities. "..The tribe is proposing a $49 million hotel and casino development that could bring $2 million a year in tax revenue to the town, said Town Chairman Tom Perock. The tribe said it would pay $92.7 million, split evenly between the town and Brown County, over 20 years. "…The communities' interest in the casino comes after the Lac du Flambeau's plans were shot down in more than a dozen communities throughout Wisconsin…" |
