Comment Deadline On Indian Casino In Wisconsin Nears30 August 2000HUDSON, WISCONSIN – Aug. 30, 2000 – As reported by The Associated Press: "City Council planned to send a report to the federal government Wednesday that says a proposed Indian casino will have a more negative impact on the community than predicted by gambling developers. "The report will go to the U.S. Department of Interior, which can approve the casino if it determines it would not harm the surrounding community and would help the three tribes that are proposing it. "…A partnership involving the Red Cliff, Sokaogon and Lac Courte Oreilles Chippewa bands wants to develop a casino at the St. Croix Meadows Greyhound Racing Park near Hudson, which is just minutes from the lucrative Twin Cities area gambling market. "In 1995, the Interior Department rejected the tribes' application for the project, but the agency agreed to reconsider it in settling a federal lawsuit alleging that it acted improperly the first time. "…The proposed site is next to where the district plans to build two schools. "The board said a casino would increase traffic and create possible safety hazards…" |
