Colts Expected to Go Undefeated

30 November 2005

NEW YORK – (PRESS RELEASE) - With Monday's decisive victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Indianapolis Colts moved one game closer to history, as they attempt to become only the second team ever to go undefeated and win the Super Bowl. The win yesterday also may have turned some skeptics into believers, the result of which is improved odds at Sportsbook.com. Odds makers have set the odds on the Colts completing the feat at +230, compared to an opening line last week of +300, and odds of them losing a game along the way are now -300, compared to -400 last week.

"Not only did the Colts beat a very good team, they did it with defense which is supposed to be their one Achilles heel," said Peter Childs, Odds Maker, Sportsbook.com. "Their odds improve now because they survived a difficult game and we feel the betting trend will start to sway more heavily in favor of Indianapolis. Already last week the sentiment was about 85 per cent in favor of the Colts going undefeated."

It's a tricky situation for odds makers as several factors must be taken into consideration when developing these odds. For example, Indianapolis could easily have home field advantage throughout the playoffs wrapped up with a few games to play in the regular season. If that happens, would Tony Dungy consider benching some of his star players like Peyton Manning, Edgerin James and Marvin Harrison to rest them for the playoffs?

"It's possible the Colts could be 15-0 when they face Arizona and Dungy might feel they can win that final game without their starters," added Childs. "It's extremely unlikely that the Colts would try to break up the rhythm of this team, but that's what makes the bet so interesting. Anything can happen and that's why everybody bets."

The Colts next play Tennessee before facing three difficult opponents before their final game against Arizona. The Colts host San Diego and pay a visit to Jacksonville and Seattle.

In addition to propositions on the Indianapolis Colts, Sportsbook.com is also offering odds on where Terrell Owens will play his first game next season. The current favorite is Dallas at 3-1 followed by Denver at 8-1, Atlanta and Philadelphia at 12-1 and Oakland at 15-1. The most bet on option is, surprisingly, that Terrell Owens will not play for any NFL team next season. Almost 18 per cent have put their money on that possibility while 17 per cent back the Eagles, 16.1 per cent back the Broncos and 12.5 per cent favor the Cowboys.
