Colorado Racing Groups Backing Slot Plan12 August 2003DENVER, Colorado – As reported by the Associated Press: “After watching bets drop for six years, Colorado's greyhound breeders and horse racers are backing a plan to add slot-like video gambling machines to the state's five racetracks. "`It will be beneficial to the greyhound industry,’ said Eric Morgan, executive director of the 24-kennel Colorado Greyhound Kennel Association. The Colorado Horse Racing Association also has an agreement with track owners. “…If approved, the plan would allow tracks in Aurora, Colorado Springs, Commerce City, Loveland and Pueblo to each operate 500 video lottery terminals, whose winning tickets can be redeemed for cash. Track owners and the state will split the profits. “…Officials in Colorado Springs and Loveland oppose the plan because it doesn't send any money to the cities, and the state's handful of casinos are also lining up to fight the proposal. “Others say gambling will turn tracks into Vegas-style casinos -- and could end up sending the dogs and horses packing. “Carey Theil, president of the dog protection group GREY2K USA, said his group may not fight the ballot measure simply because it thinks track owners may phase out racing once the machines arrive. “…Greyhound groups across the country support VLTs at racetracks, simply because it boosts awareness of an attraction that once drew fans by the tens of thousands…” |
