Colorado Campaigns Spending Tops $6 Million30 September 2003DENVER, Colorado – As reported by the Associated Press: "The cost of the campaigns for and against an initiative to allow video lottery terminals at racetracks has topped $6 million, according to finance reports filed with the state. "If the spending on Amendment 33 continues at the same pace, it could surpass the record $6.6 million for a ballot proposal set three years ago. "The measure's supporters raised $990,000 in the past two weeks, according to reports filed Monday with the Colorado secretary of state's office. That pushes the total raised by Colorado's Economy and Environment to $3.1 million. "The opposition, Don't Turn Racetracks into Casinos, raised $791,000 in the past two weeks to bring its total to $2.9 million, according to state records. The campaign has spent $1.4 million. "…Under Amendment 33, the Colorado Lottery Commission would be allowed to install 500 video lottery terminals at each of Colorado's five existing dog and horse track and in casinos in the gambling towns of Black Hawk, Central City and Cripple Creek. "…The opposition campaign is financed almost entirely by Colorado's mountain casinos, which fear a loss of market share if racetracks get additional gambling…" |
