Coinless Slots Lead to Layoffs

23 April 2003

OHIO -- As reported by the WLWT Channel Cincinnati: "The sounds of coins collecting at the bottoms of slot machines may be a thing of the past, and area casino workers could be without jobs because of it.

"According to a recent survey, 80 percent of slot players favor a system known as TITO, which stands for Ticket-in, Ticket-out, WLWT Eyewitness News 5's Mark Kahler reported Tuesday. New technology would allow cumbersome coins to be replaced by tickets that would tell players their winnings ... or losings.

"The technology would lower the need for attendants to help winners cash out at the end of a session, Kahler reported. Argosy Casino in Lawrenceburg, Ind., will eliminate an unannounced number of their employees -- probably fewer than 50 in the near future.

"Argosy is considering offering voluntary-separation packages, which would serve as severance pay for those who agree to take themselves off the payroll, Kahler reported.

"...Argosy and the union will know May 1 how many slot floor workers are willing to accept that separation package."
