Cockfighting Banned in Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA – As reported by the Australian: "The cockfighting season was due to open in Oklahoma on Saturday night.

"But opening night celebrations at the Texona Game Club were scuttled by a ballot initiative - overwhelmingly endorsed at Wednesday's mid-term elections - to ban the bloodsport.

"`Cockfighting is cruel, it promotes illegal gambling and it's simply embarrassing to Oklahoma to be seen as one of only a tiny handful of locations outside of the Third World where this activity is legal,' said Governor Frank Keating, who sponsored the ballot.

"Now, only Louisiana and parts of New Mexico still allow the controversial sport, in which two roosters wearing gaffs - or small knives - fight to the death…"
