Clout-Heavy Foreman Tied to Sports Bets at O'Hare2 June 2003CHICAGO -- As reported by the Chicago Sun-Times: ``A foreman of electricians at O'Hare Airport is under internal investigation for allegedly running a sports book on city time, collecting a 10 percent management fee off the top and paying out weekly winnings of $1,000 or more. ``…Office pools are technically illegal but not uncommon during the Super Bowl and NCAA basketball tournament. But the O'Hare operation was much more than that, according to employees who said they placed bets through the foreman. ``At least 100 people placed bets each week on all sports, including a $25,000 Super Bowl pool, sources said. There was even a home run contest where the pot kept building until a designated Major League Baseball slugger reached 33 home runs. ``The betting operation has been going on for years and continued until an anonymous letter complaining of a 'big money' pool with 'year-round' betting was sent to Aviation Commissioner Tom Walker, the sources said. ``Walker forwarded the allegations to city Inspector General Alexander Vroustouris, and an investigation was launched. ``…The foreman under investigation was known to his airport colleagues as a "wannabe bookie" who got a 10 percent management fee for his efforts, according to an O'Hare electrician who asked to remain anonymous. ```He ran big pools on city time. He had to have 100 people. If you didn't get in his pool, you'd get [assigned to] crappy jobs,' the electrician said…" |
