Close Finish for Iowa Gambling Vote

7 July 2003

IOWA – As reported by the Des Moines Register: “Voters have approved gambling proposals in two north Iowa counties this summer, but a third gambling vote, set for Tuesday in the Iowa Great Lakes region, is far from a sure thing.

“Opponents of a riverboat-style casino in Dickinson County think they have collected more money than any previous local anti-gambling campaign.

“…They also like their chances of defeating the proposal.

“…Darwin Pike, spokesman for the pro-gambling group, Jobs for the Corridor Committee, said he was optimistic but wouldn't make a prediction.

“…A vote favoring a riverboat doesn't mean slot machines will open anytime soon in Dickinson County, because the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission has placed a moratorium on issuing gambling licenses. Even if the restriction was lifted, it might be 11/2 to two years before a casino boat could begin operating…”
