Clocks and Lights Mandatory for Australian Gaming Venues

AUSTRALIA -- Jan. 30, 2001 --As reported by the Sydney Herald Sun: "Pokie operators will be forced to install clocks on every poker machine and flood gaming rooms with light in a dramatic State Government reversal.

"Thirty thousand clocks will be installed on machines directly in sight of users.

"Brighter lighting is intended to counter the hypnotic effect of the flashing lights of poker machines.

"...The announcement was welcomed by welfare groups but angered gaming operators, who claim the move will cost them millions.

"...The government plans more initiatives, including how to implement its regional caps policy and whether to regulate ATMs at gaming venues.

"...The government will not decide what the clocks will look like or what form lighting laws will take until a regulatory impact statement is prepared.

"...Anti-gambling campaigner the Rev. Tim Costello said he was pleased the government had made the decision, but believed it had been dragged kicking and screaming by the public..."
