Claims Prove Harness Racing a Booming Sport26 June 2000REXDALE, ONTARIO -- June 26, 2000 – (Press Release) Proof that harness racing is booming in Ontario is the record number of claims at racetracks. At Woodbine on Friday night, June 23, an Ontario Jockey Club record 17 horses changed hands through claims with a total of $483,750 spent. To date, 603 claims have been made on horses racing at Woodbine and Mohawk this year for a total of $13.2 million spent. With each claim there is GST paid, and that translates to $928,620 for the Ontario government. Claiming races are a method of classifying a horse by placing a value on the animal so it can race competitively against horses of similar caliber. Once entered in a claiming race, a horse is then eligible to become claimed by other owners with the necessary racing credentials, for whatever claiming price it was entered in. Claiming races exist for those horses from $2,000, up to more than $100,000 at some of the larger tracks. |
