Civil Lawsuits Target Canadian Lottery Scam

4 June 2002

VANCOUVER, Canada -- (CP) --Police accusations that elderly people were scammed by a telemarketing operation based here have led to civil suits being filed by Canadian and U.S. officials.

The outfit, run under several names, singled out seniors in the U.S. and United Kingdom with a foreign lottery scam, police said in a release issued Friday.

Investigators allege victims were told they had won a lottery, but had to pay thousands of dollars in taxes and fees.

The victims' collective loss is believed to total about $3 million US.

Cash, property and assets worth $2.8 million were seized following a search of the Vancouver telemarketing business by an RCMP task force on Thursday.

The B.C. Director of Trade Practices is taking civil action against several implicated people who live in the Vancouver area, said police.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed similar suits on behalf of U.S. victims.
