Churchill Expects Small Derby Seat Loss

KENTUCKY – As reported by the Thoroughbred Times: "Despite on ongoing $121-million renovation project, Churchill Downs officials anticipate a net loss of slightly more than 313 seats for the 2004 Kentucky Derby (G1).

"In 2003, Churchill's seating capacity was 54,328 on Derby day and when the 130th edition of the American classic is run on May 1 next year, seating capacity will total 54,015.

"…A portion of the Skye Terrace will be gone as well, with the seating capacity of that area declining from 2,376 to 1,320. Churchill will lose an additional 1,295 of its regular outdoor seats in its clubhouse/grandstand area and an additional 1,469 seats will be lost from bleacher areas.

"To partially make up for these losses, Churchill plans to erect a hospitality village in the track's infield, with tented seating for 3,500. Capacity in the Marquee Village, located adjacent to the Longfield Avenue parking lot on the clubhouse turn, will be increased from 2,808 to 3,306…"
