Churchill Chief Says Racing Enjoying Growth21 June 2002LOUISVILLE, Kentucky – As reported by the (Kentucky) Herald-Leader Business Writer Churchill Downs Inc. is riding the crest of a wavelet of enthusiasm for horse racing following this Triple Crown season, company president and CEO Thomas H. Meeker told shareholders yesterday. "Often the sport `has for years self-flagellated,' in recent years Meeker said, `but now we see an industry that is enjoying good growth -- in hard economic times.' "…Churchill already enjoys a disproportionate share of the market, he said -- it captures 19 percent of simulcast betting with only 11 percent of thoroughbred races. "Meeker said 26 percent of all U.S. wagering -- about $3.9 billion -- is on races run at one of Churchill's seven tracks. "Churchill will continue to push for other gambling products such as slots in Kentucky and other states, he said…" |
