Chips Down For U.K. Gambler3 September 2002U.K. – As reported by the Grimsby Telegraph: ``A Grimsby man who admitted stealing £30,000 of public money from North East Lincolnshire Council to feed his alcohol and gambling addiction has been jailed for six months. ``…the day Paul Wright was found out, he used £7,000 of it to take an extended holiday in the casino capital of Las Vegas, before coming home and handing himself in to police with just £82.17 on him. ``…The gambler, who worked for North East Lincolnshire Council for more than 20 years, was based in the stores depot on Doughty Road, Grimsby at the time and was responsible for depositing all cash from that department. ``…The court heard how NELC cashier Christine Simpson noticed no deposits had been made by the stores department between April and July last year. ``The council's auditors were called to investigate the case, and £6,500 was discovered in a drawer in Wright's office. ``…Wright told police he started off borrowing the money and putting it back when he worked overtime, but the overtime stopped. ``…Judge Michael Mettyear heard Wright started to gamble the money he stole hoping to win and pay it back - taking a three-week trip to Nevada's gambling centre, but it got worse. ``…`When he left Las Vegas, he booked in to a New York hotel for three weeks and went through a period of detox from alcohol. From that day he has not gambled and is almost teetotal. Then he handed himself in at the police station.'…" |
