Chinese Gang Leaders on Trial in Foxwoods Loan-Sharking

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut -- As reported by the Connecticut Post: ``A Chinese loan-sharking ring that preyed on Asian gamblers at Foxwoods Resort Casino demanded $100 interest every three days for each $1,000 it loaned, according to an undercover operative.

``Kun Lin a 31-year-old New Yorker recruited by the FBI to infiltrate the ring testified before U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton and a 14-member jury on Monday.

``...Lin's testimony came during the start of what is expected to be a weeklong trial of Chen and Gong Chai Sun of San Francisco.

``The two men allegedly ran the loan-sharking operation from January 1999 to December 2001. They are charged with conspiring to collect extortionate loans.

``...Following his arrest, Chen said the organization used verbal threats and strong body language, according to FBI Special Agent Peter Hsieh.

``They would hang around with their debtor-gamblers and immediately collect on any winnings.

``...Hsieh said gamblers would have to turn over a document like their immigration service permit to stay in the country or a driver's license to obtain a loan..."
