China Executes Former Deputy Mayor for Gambling Spree

BEIJING, China –– As reported by the Associated Press: "A former deputy mayor of a major Chinese city who spent nearly $5 million in public money on a gambling spree was one of two officials executed Wednesday for corruption, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

"Former Deputy Mayor Ma Xiangdong was convicted in a graft scandal that brought down the government of Shenyang, the biggest city in China's northeast. In all, 16 officials, including the city mayor, were convicted of corruption charges.

"Hundreds of Chinese officials have been sentenced to death and thousands of others punished in an anti-graft crackdown meant to restore public faith in a communist system widely viewed as corrupt and abusive.

"…According to earlier state media reports, Ma spent $4.8 million in public money on a gambling spree in the former Portuguese colony of Macau on China's southern coast…"
