Chicago Governor makes sure the decked is stacked right

6 July 2001

Chicago Governor George Ryan slyly waited till late-Friday to remove Sterling "Mac" Ryder and Staci Yandle, two respected Illinois Gaming Board members, who had helped defeat a Rosemont casino proposal that reeked of politics and alleged mob ties, according to the Chicago Tribune. At the beginning of the year, the gaming board voted 4-1 against an effort by Emerald Casino Inc. to open a casino in Rosemont. Apparently, according to the board''s administrator, an investigation revealed, "the insidious presence of organized crime elements associated with this proposed project" while Emerald "repeatedly made false and misleading statements" to the board. Emerald has appealed the rejection and now, many people across the spectrum are waiting with bated breath to see if Ryan’s three recent appointments will reverse the board’s earlier decision – namely allowing organized crime an entrée into a casino, and perhaps which board members will be next out the door, when news cameras are focused elsewhere.
