Cherokee Tribe Seeks Vegas-Style Gaming Approval

5 December 2003

RALEIGH, North Carolina – As reported by the Asheville Citizen Times: "Cherokee leaders want to expand their gambling compact with the state to allow Las Vegas-style gaming tables in their casino.

"Gaming tables, such as blackjack and roulette, could bring new jobs and more than $20 million a year in sales and personal income taxes to the state, according to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Some of those new jobs would pay between $10 and $20 an hour.

"…Michell Hicks, the tribe's new principal chief, said gaming tables would be `part of the proposed expansion, that we be given that opportunity as a tribal government.'

"…But to lay the groundwork for lucrative gaming tables, the Cherokees will have to get state government support. That means courting Gov. Mike Easley and members of the General Assembly, who sometimes work at odds. Easley has pushed for a statewide lottery, but the state House voted down a proposal for a statewide referendum on the issue.

"…Tribal leaders are also considering new lobbyists to fight for their interests in Raleigh. Hicks said they hope to hire a lobbyist early next year.

"…The casino now boasts 5,500 slot machines, table games, Keno, bingo, poker and horseracing. The resort complex is also home to three hotels, 30 restaurants and eateries, a 1,450-seat theater, a night club and museum.
