Charity Wants New Body To Control Lottery29 August 2000IRELAND –Aug. 29, 2000 – As reported by The Irish Independent: "A leading charity yesterday demanded that control over the allocation of National Lottery funds be taken away from politicians. "Calls were also made on RTE Radio for Richard Branson to take over the operation of the Irish Lottery. The head of Virgin is set to win the franchise for the UK lottery. "…Liam O'Dwyer [national coordinator of the St Vincent de Paul Society] said the government argument is that individual departments were in the best position to make allocations because they had the knowledge. But Mr O'Dwyer described the process as ultimately political because Ministers headed the departments. "…He also urged that the cost of playing Lotto be reduced to the initial £1 charge…" |
