Changing the Law18 July 2001A British government-commissioned review is expected to propose a complete revision of the country’s gambling laws. The report was originally commissioned by the Home Office in 1999 but has since been taken over by the Department of Culture, Media, and Sport. The anticipated liberalization is expected to lead the way for Las Vegas-style casino resorts. One of the major changes believed to have been proposed is the removal of the current rule, which requires punters to apply for casino membership 24 hours before entering. Simultaneously, the review is believed to recommend tightening up control on the spread of under age gambling. Fruit machines in venues such as fish and chip shops are expected to be banned. In the spirit of free enterprise, the review recommends not limiting the development of new casinos, subject of course to licensing, and the casino being able to prove there is a demand. It does not seem that there will be a problem as regards to the latter especially. |
