Changed Detroit Casino Plans Fail to Satisfy Critics30 March 2001DETROIT, Michigan – March 30, 2001 –As reported by the Detroit News:" Shrinking the city's riverfront casino plan didn't change many minds among longtime critics and opponents of legalized gambling in Detroit. "Mayor Archer's sudden decision surprised landowners who were holding out for top dollar. It was their negotiating posture that the mayor said forced him to change the plan. " But, attorneys for some of the landowners said they had agreed to take the city's latest offers. "…Opponents of riverfront casinos criticized Archer's latest plan for just one riverfront casino, saying it has all the disadvantages of the previous plan that called for three gambling houses on the Detroit River. "…MGM will relocate to the river on some of the 57 acres of land where the city wanted three casinos, but the Greektown and MotorCity Casinos would remain in their current locations and expand. "Whether it's one casino or three, many oppose casino gambling on the riverfront. "…Bob Jackman, president of the Riverfront East Alliance, said his group opposes any casinos on the river. His group headed a petition drive to put the issue of riverfront casinos before voters. A judge ruled the petition was invalid and the group is appealing that ruling. "…State Rep. Hansen Clarke, D-Detroit, an opponent of casino development on the riverfront, said the mayor's announcement doesn't change his position. Clarke is going forward with plans to force a voter referendum on the issue…" |
