Casinos Support Credit Cards Ban for Online Gambling14 February 2002WASHINGTON, D.C. – As reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal: "The casino industry is leaning heavily toward endorsing a bill to ban the use of credit cards to pay for Internet gambling transactions, sources said Wednesday. "While throwing its support behind the bill by Rep. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, the casino industry plans to oppose a comprehensive Internet gambling ban proposed by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., sources said on condition of anonymity. "…`I still need to talk to four or five members of our board (of directors). I'm not sure when we will make a statement,' said [Frank] Fahrenkopf, who is president of the American Gaming Association. "Fahrenkopf briefed the Nevada congressional delegation Wednesday about the Leach and Goodlatte bills, and clearly favored the Iowan's legislation in his presentation, according to sources. "…Fahrenkopf said he still believes Goodlatte's bill unfairly favors the horse racing industry over casinos. While pari-mutuel bets could be placed on the Internet under Goodlatte's bill, Fahrenkopf has said, casino wagers could not. "…The casino industry's move toward Leach's bill is based partly on the growing number of banks that are refusing to process payments for Internet gambling, sources said…" |
