Casinos Oppose Utah-Nevada Border Change

WEST WENDOVER, Nevada – Nov. 27, 2001 –As reported by the Associated Press: "The proposal to expand Nevada's border around Wendover, Utah, merging the town with its Nevada neighbor, was endorsed by two residents and opposed by casino representatives speaking at a congressional hearing.

"Kathy Bailey said that 20 years ago the only Wendover was in Utah, with just a few tiny casinos sitting isolated on the Nevada side.

"…But the Nevada community has far outdistanced Utah's Wendover in property values and services.

"The success of West Wendover, [Nevada], `has led to Wendover, Utah's, decline,' Bailey said, endorsing the plan to combine them into one Nevada city and letting all residents share in the prosperity.

"…`People forget we were once one community,' [Nevada resident Connie] Clark Clark said. `We need to be again.'

"Their endorsement was countered by a unified front of casino executives during the 90-minute congressional field hearing.

"…Casino operators want the state line to stay right where it is.

"`It is unseemly for the state of Utah to offload a problem child,' said Mike Devine, chief executive at the State Line and Silver Smith Casino Resorts.

"He says the communities can use interlocal agreements to combine duplicative services…"
