Casinos Not Welcomed in East Connecticut

CONNECTICUT – As reported by the Many officials in eastern Connecticut said they would be opposed to a casino in their towns after representatives for the Eastern Pequots and Paucatuck Eastern Pequots said Monday they plan to pursue building a casino somewhere in the state.

"Officials said they would not want a casino in their towns because of such problems as more traffic and population.

"`Sterling would be opposed to a casino being built here because of the negative impact on our town,' First Selectman Dale Clark said.

"…Sterling is not the only town opposed to a possible casino. Michael Kerns, assistant town manager for Killingly, said there are too many drawbacks to bringing a casino to town.

"…Kerns said more children with parents working at the new casino would be entering Killingly's schools, which would increase the costs of educating those children. With the increase in education and street costs, an increase in taxes would be likely.

"…`The welfare of towns willing to approve casino plans would be at risk,' Putnam Mayor Danny Rovero said.

"…Nevertheless, officials in some towns said they would entertain the idea and would bring any proposals to residents.

"…Lisbon First Selectman Tom Sparkman said the town would think about any proposals, but he said he is not sure if Lisbon is the right location for a casino…"
