Casinos Near in New York?

28 December 1997

There are clear signs that casinos are on the near horizon in New York state. The Buffalo News reports that Gov. Pataki will urge state lawmakers to pass legislation legalizing casino gaming when they return next month. The mayor of Buffalo, looking down the throat of a huge casino success across the Niagara river in Ontario, says "I think it's long overdue," and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani of New York City now says his administration is thinking seriously about whether to locate a casino on Governor's Island, which he called "a perfect location", or in the Rockaways. In either case, he said, he would make certain it was regulated, that organized crime was kept out, and that the city would "extract a substantial amount of money from it that can be invested in the city."
