Casinos Like How Atlantic City Execs Operate

ATLANTIC CITY -- As reported by the Press of Atlantic City: ``While the epicenter of casino gambling remains in Las Vegas, operational control of the gaming industry is shifting to veteran Atlantic City executives.

``Wednesday's promotion of Timothy Wilmott to chief operating officer of Harrah's Entertainment Inc., effective Jan. 1, puts 'Atlantic City guys' in charge of corporate operations at four of the six largest U.S. casino companies.

``Wallace Barr, an Atlantic City fixture for 23 years, was named sole chief operating officer of Park Place Entertainment Corp. last summer; Mark Brown, who has spent his entire adult life working in the Atlantic City casino industry, became chief operating officer of Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts Inc. more than two years ago; and Jack Gallaway, who was president of Tropicana Casino and Resort for eight years, became chief operating officer of Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. six years ago.

``Wilmott, currently Harrah's Eastern Division president, has worked 12 years here.

``Together, the four men have spent 66 years working in Atlantic City and five years in Las Vegas.

``...The Atlantic City thread connecting the four chief operating officers is no coincidence, they say.

``...Atlantic City is the drive-in gambling capital, where casinos sit elbow-to-elbow intensely competing for the daily wave of price-sensitive motorists and bus passengers, most of whom will be heading home after a short stay. Executives here dig to learn their customers' habits and preferences in a hurry..."
