Casino workers union has new election15 October 2001The state''s largest casino workers union has been ordered to hold a new election because its June 1999 contest was unjust, a federal judge has ruled. U.S. District Court Judge Joseph E. Irenas said in a conclusion issued on Friday that 54 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union has to hold new election within 120 days. U.S. Department of Labor, which made the ruling, upheld a conclusion, which maintained that the union didn’t mailed election notices to 1,975 members and had failed sending ballots to 1,596 members. The union that represents 15,000 workers, didn’t made "reasonable efforts" to maintain a current list of members'' home addresses, and that union workers improperly used phone lists to solicit votes for incumbent officers, Officials said. Union officials disputed the charges, declaring that the violations were merely "technical." |
