2 July 2003

QUEBEC – As reported by the Canadian Press: “A Montreal Casino employee who was questioned in connection with an alleged loansharking ring that police say was run out of the casino has been fired, the TVA television network reports.

“The woman, a waitress at the casino's bar, was connected to one of the alleged ring's head money-lenders, the network reported Tuesday.

“…The loansharking ring operated at the casino and several other establishments in the Montreal area, police allege.

“Gamblers, some of whom were in financial trouble, were charged illegal interest rates of up to 600 per cent on loans, said police.

“…Those who didn't pay back the money were threatened with violence, but police said the threats were not carried out…”
