Casino shootout in South Africa

10 February 2001

Armed robbers held up three stores at the popular Montecasino shopping and casino complex in Johannesburg, South Africa this week. According to Police spokesperson Chris Wilken, the robbers, armed with AK47''s, handguns and hammers, entered the complex in the evening. They broke the store windows and fired several shots into the air, causing pandemonium among the scores of customers in the center. The balaclava-clad robbers forced staff to open the display cabinets and then ordered them and clients to lie on the floor while they cleared the display units of all jewelry. Two patrons were lightly injured by the broken glass while a third was hurt when the robbers attacked him and stole his cellular phone and wallet. The thieves fled in two of their own vehicles and hijacked a third at the casino. The hijack victim was not injured. Wilken said police were studying video footage at present and regarded the investigation of the crime as a high priority.
