Casino Shooter was Texas Fugitive

SAN DIEGO – As reported by the North County Times: ``The man who wounded a Riverside County sheriff's deputy and then killed a security guard at a Valley Center casino before turning the gun on himself on Saturday was a fugitive from Texas, authorities confirmed Monday.

``Officials close to the investigation have identified the dead suspect as William Edward O'Neal, 56. The San Diego County medical examiner's office has yet to officially release his name pending notification of family.

``Authorities have yet to say where O'Neal was living or why he was in the Riverside and San Diego county areas.

``O'Neal served 13 years of a 24-year prison sentence in Texas and was released from custody there on June 28, 2001, a spokeswoman for the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles said Monday.

``…O'Neal's Texas conviction was for a robbery with a deadly weapon on Dec. 15, 1987, according to Texas court records.

``Authorities in Riverside and San Diego counties say O'Neal may have committed a string of robberies in both counties before the Saturday crime spree that ended with his death and that of a security guard, Raymond Ives, 61, of Oceanside…"
