Casino Settles Air Quality Suit26 June 2002NEW ORLEANS – As reported by the Associated Press: ``About 1,000 current and former employees at the Treasure Chest casino in Kenner have agreed to settle a lawsuit over the riverboat's air quality for $2.6 million. ``According to an order signed this month by U.S. District Judge Mary Ann Vial Lemmon, the workers will be paid according to how long they worked at the casino, whether they have smoked and the severity of their ailments. ``…In the suit, employees alleged that the ventilation system on the vessel was faulty and recirculated smoky air through the casino, making them sick. In September 1997, the case was certified as a class action. ``…Under the terms of the settlement, people connected with the case are prohibited from talking about it. ``…Rob Stillwell, a spokesman for Boyd Gaming Corp., the Las Vegas-based company that bought the Treasure Chest in October 1997, said he had no comment. ``…The plaintiffs will receive amounts ranging from $200 to $130,000…" |
