Casino Plan Stirs Debate in the Philippines24 December 2001THE PHILIPPINES -- Dec. 22, 2001 -- As reported by the (Philippines) Inquirer: ``The plan to build a casino at the Philippine Christmas Village here has stirred debates among provincial board members. ``Revenues from casino operations, the appropriateness of putting up a gambling business at the park and the morality of having one in this city are the contentious issues in the debate that has drawn even the Archdiocese of San Fernando. ``The proponents--Board Member Crisostomo Garbo and Ferdinand Labung--appeared determined to see their proposal through. ``After withdrawing last Wednesday their `urgent motion for the unanimous approval' of the establishment of the casino, Garbo and Labung asked the board to review the proposal and to subject it to a public hearing. ``...The board has set the first public hearing on Jan. 7..." |
