Casino Plan Proposed to Revive Millennium Dome

21 December 2001

UNITED KINGDOM – Dec. 21, 2001 --As reported by the U.K. Times: "Las Vegas-style casinos are the latest gamble in the attempt to transform the Millennium Dome from a loss-making white elephant into Europe's leading entertainment centre, it emerged yesterday.

"The latest consortium attempting to buy the showpiece confirmed last night that it was developing proposals to open casinos at the Greenwich site to woo big spending customers all year round.

"Roulette wheels, slot machines, blackjack and poker tables could be stationed under the Dome canopy. They could also go in the string of hotels, restaurants and bars earmarked for an adjacent waterfront development.

"But first Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) would have to overturn decades-old gaming laws before gambling could be permitted on the 150-acre site.

"…The consortium is pinning its hopes on the ongoing Budd review into gaming laws paving the way for an expansion of registered gambling establishments in London and across the rest of the country.

"…Timothy Leiweken, president of the Colarado-based conglomerate that owns the London Arena venue, said: `Our vision for the project is much different from the original. When the new Dome is opened it will be an entertainment destination that includes restaurants, casinos, bars, offices and residences.'

"…The casinos could be incorporated under the Dome structure or in hotels in an adjacent waterfront development, alongside up to 5,000 new homes.

"AEG has signed a deal with a property group, Meridian Delta, to acquire the Dome and 150 acres of surrounding land for no charge…"
