Casino Petition Drive Lacks Backers21 June 2000DETROIT, MICHIGAN – June 21, 2000 – As reported by The Detroit News: "A group looking to block construction of permanent casinos in Rivertown failed to gather enough signatures to put the issue before city voters this fall. "The Riverfront East Alliance fell short of collecting nearly 5,000 signatures it needed by Tuesday to make the November election. The proposal would have enacted an ordinance prohibiting casinos from an area bounded by Jefferson and the Detroit River, and the Renaissance Center and East Grand Boulevard. "…Jackman said his group will come up with a new plan." |
