Casino Pays $65 Million to Tribal Members

10 May 2002

TACOMA, Washington – As reported by King 5 News: "How would you like someone to tell you they were going throw an extra $2,000 a month your way? That's what happening to members of Western Washington's Puyallup tribe - compliments of the Emerald Queen Casino.

"Tribal leaders said from the beginning, they would share whatever wealth was generated by the casino with the tribal members

"…They knew that casino-style gambling in an old-time riverboat gambling atmosphere would be a money-maker, and they were right. The Puyallup owned casino is rolling in it. So the tribal council voted to increase payments from revenue generated by casino, which will pay $65 million a year to the tribe's 2,700 members.

"Starting Saturday, each member - including children - of the Puyallup Tribe will receive $2,000 a month. For a family of four, that would be $96,000 a year.

"…Nobody expected it to happen this quickly when the rivberboat casino was floated into Tacoma in 1997.

"…The payments are to continue indefinitely, and could even go up depending on the casino's profits…"
