Casino Owner Tied to Elliott Case

When Dewayne Williams needed a character reference for Mississippi gaming license applications in the early 1990s, he turned to his old friend, then- state Sen. W.D. Childers.

Childers now is suspended by the governor from the Escambia County Commission after he and another old friend, real estate agent Joe Elliott, were indicted on charges stemming from the county's purchase last year of the $3.9 million Pensacola Soccer Complex.

On the very day Elliott sold the county its most expensive property ever, he wired $231,000 from his proceeds of the sale to an offshore casino gambling boat in Mayport, just outside of Jacksonville.

The owner of the gambling boat: Dewayne Williams.

Prosecutors now are preparing for Elliott's December trial on charges of racketeering, bribery and money laundering.
