Casino Opponents Meet Saskatoon Council19 November 2002SASKATCHEWAN – As reported by the Saskatoon Star Phoenix: "Saskatoon city councillors were implored Monday night by opponents of a new casino in the city to find the "moral courage" to turn down the "tantalizing lures of money." "`The casino gambling proposal further promotes the corrupt attitude in our society of gaining something for nothing rather than promoting diligent work and effort to make a living,' said Bishop Allan Grundahl, who spoke with Rev. Colin Clay on behalf of Saskatoon's church leaders. "…Council is waiting for a proposal from the Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) and Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA) to build a `destination' casino. One favoured proposal is a $60-million complex on 22nd Street across from the Centennial Auditorium. "Councillors are split on the idea of a plebiscite. Some say the casino issue is so big it demands a public vote, while others argue councillors have a responsibility to deal with big issues on their own…' |
