Casino: No Bonuses For Employees

CALIFORNIA – Nov. 30, 2001—As reported by the (California) Desert Sun: "Nearly 600 employees of Spotlight 29 Casino near Coachella won't be getting holiday bonuses this year, casino officials acknowledged.

"A holiday bonus program that had been in effect for "several" years has been terminated for 2001 because, casino officials said, the organization is financially strained by a major remodeling project.

"Gene Gambale, general counsel for the Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians, said the decision to eliminate bonuses was made in conjunction with other cost-cutting measures and was not taken lightly.

"…Gambale said fewer customers in recent months combined with financing the construction of a $60 million expansion to be run by Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts resulted in lower-than-expected cash flow.

"…The announcement came just weeks after Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts notified its Atlantic City employees that they would not receive holiday bonuses this year.

"The company, run by casino owner Donald Trump, has an agreement to manage Spotlight 29 Casino when the expansion opens in March.

"Gambale said the elimination of bonuses in Atlantic City and Coachella are unrelated.

"…The owners of two other valley casinos said they intend to stick with their holiday bonus program in 2001…"
