Casino Lost and Found Items Run the Gamut

9 April 2001

RENO, Nevada –- As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: ``What do the millions of visitors to the Reno-Tahoe area leave behind in addition to a welcome contribution to the economy?

``…There are watches and jewelry, cell phones and clothes. Items valuable and useless, commonplace and bizarre are abandoned in hotel rooms or forgotten on casino floors.

``At Reno's Peppermill Hotel-Casino, guests have left canes and cameras, compact discs and rosary beads.

"`You wonder how a guy could walk out of the hotel without his hairpiece, but it's happened,' said Miles Ottenheimer, a spokesman for the Peppermill.

``… The security office at Harrah's in Reno recovers an estimated 4,000 items each year; the housekeeping department, thousands more.

```You have everything from tire chains to baby bottles,' said Rich Hearrell, security supervisor. `Then we go to the unusual, unique sexual devices. Twice we've had false teeth come in. We've found pistols, knives, throwing stars.'
``…Policies differ property-to-property, but lost items are usually stored at least a month. Unclaimed items are generally donated to charity or thrift shops. Cash may go to a fund for resort employees in need.
