Casino-less Tribes to Receive Federal Funds28 January 2001SACRAMENTO, California -- Jan. 28, 2001 -- As reported by the Californian: "In a contentious meeting Thursday, the newly formed California Gambling Control Commission approved a formula to distribute $36 million from a revenue-sharing trust fund to the state's non-gambling tribes. "...The commission's unanimous decision to distribute the money, a combination of fees collected from gambling tribes, angered some of the tribes because it means that tribes with some slot machines may get less of a share of the funds than tribes with no machines. "The problem stems from language in the state's gambling agreement with tribes. The agreement said `non-gambling' tribes should get an `equal share' of the money, but neither term is defined. "Under federal regulations, tribes with 349 slot machines or fewer are considered non-gambling tribes. "...But some tribes are holding fast to Gov. Gray Davis' promise that each non-gambling tribe would get about $1.1 million annually from the trust fund, which was established as a way to keep all tribes from gambling. "...The commission said if there isn't enough money in the fund to give each non-gambling tribe the full $1.1 million stated in the agreement, then tribes would get a proportional share of the funds based on how much money there is and how many machines the tribes have in operation..." |
