Casino Keeps Lid on 'Packer' Video Tape

AUSTRALIA—Aug. 12, 2000 – As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald: "A Star City casino inspector yesterday refused to tell MPs about an alleged surveillance video called the The Kerry Packer Tape.

"The inspector, Mr Paul Terrett, declined to answer questions about the tape when he appeared before a NSW parliamentary committee inquiring into the casino.

"…[Liberal MP Mr John] Hannaford gave the committee sheets of paper believed to list inspectors' reports of incidents at Star City, but the committee has not publicly released the document.

"…The committee heard a range of allegations concerning the Government's handling of the casino and the operator's suitability to run Star City.

"Among the allegations:

"Gamblers were dealt hands from packs with missing cards;

"…The casino was operating extra gaming tables in contravention of its licence;

"…Surveillance inspectors were using security photographs to meet female patrons;

"…A security video tape of of the fracas at the casino in January 1998, which led to the death of Mr Peter Dalamangas, had one minute and 17 seconds erased.

"…The Upper House general purpose standing committee resumed its inquiry into the casino yesterday..
