Casino Guests Hit with Norwalk Virus14 February 2003RENO, Nevada – As reported by the Reno Gazette-Journal: "County health officials said Thursday they were testing an additional 13 sick guests and employees of the Atlantis Casino Resort after four others were confirmed to have the Norwalk virus. "Cass Luke, spokeswoman with the Washoe County Health Department, said officials had not determined where the people contracted the flu-like virus. "But one sickened guest said in an interview that her group of friends never left the casino and ate only at its restaurants before all six became ill. "Darlene Sullivan, assistant general manager of the Atlantis, said there are no solid links between the virus and the casino. "…Sullivan said the casino continues to press its hygiene and sanitation policies and is working with the health department. "…The Norwalk virus is a gastrointestinal bacteria spread through the handling of food, health officials said. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The illness has received media attention recently for sickening cruise ship passengers. "Barbara Micheli of Geyserville, Calif., said she and five female friends arrived at the Atlantis on Saturday, gambled all day and had dinner at the casino's steak house. "The next day some of the women ate at the snack bar, she said, and later they all had dinner at another Atlantis restaurant. At about 8:30 p.m., one of the women began having gastrointestinal problems, she said. By morning, all were suffering, she said…" |
